How Does It Work?

About Therapy

Therapy has become a mystery term that brings up images of sitting in an office with a stranger being asked about your childhood and crying. As we grow in our beliefs and understanding of mental health and its pervasive impacts on our lives, lots of folx are turning to therapy to find their joy. But what exactly does it look like? Well, at the end of the day, therapy gets to be your very own Choose Your Own Adventure. From what is talked about, how you experience therapy (virtually or in-person), or how often you attend, therapy is designed with you and for you. Every person will have unique needs and goals for their time and those are what drive the sessions. Each session is typically 50 minutes long and is an open space for you to take the time to cry, rage, check yourself, or finally say out loud "I deserved better".  Studies show that folx who go to therapy are happier and healthier - and that is something we all deserve to be a little more of.

How To Get Started

Before anything else, I want to get to know you so I ask that all clients attend a 15-minute phone consultation where we can make sure I'm the right fit for you. We'll chat about what's bringing you to therapy, what has worked with therapists in the past, and what you want from me. From there on out we will explore anything you find important or that is bothering you.

For folx seeking a new therapist, the big question is often "What do I talk about". While every client is different, it can be helpful to create a self-inventory to identify what you want to address in your life and how it's impacting you currently. Therapy topics can include gender identity, couple difficulties or problems, post-partum depression, general anxiety, work stress, family dynamics, self-worth concerns, or simply feeling overwhelmed in the chaos of the world. Whatever the concern or issue is, there is space for it in therapy.
